For 30 consecutive years, Vanier College has organized and hosted the Annual Vanier College Symposium on the Holocaust and Genocide. For this year’s event, taking place from April 4-8, 2022, Vanier has partnered with the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies. The symposium is also being co-sponsored by the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights.
Topics include: The Holocaust, the Armenian genocide, the war in Ukraine, Afghanistan and Talibanism, antisemitism, etc. This year, events will take place in the Vanier Auditorium (A-103, with some of the international guest speakers giving presentations in person and others via ZOOM. Speakers include the following.
Holocaust historian Dr. Efraim Zurof, chief Nazi-hunter of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the director of the Center's Israel Office and Eastern European Affairs. Topic: “Post-war Justice and the pursuit of Nazi war criminals” April 4, 2022, 9:00 AM.
Jeff Benvenuto, Adjunct Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Gratz College and a contributing co-editor of Colonial Genocide in Indigenous North America. Topic: “Indigenous Genocide,’ April 4, 2022, 10:30 AM.
Mr. Bob Rae, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the United Nations in New York. In 2017, Mr. Rae was appointed Canada’s Special Envoy to Myanmar and later was named Canada’s Special Envoy on Humanitarian and Refugee issues. Topic: “The Plight of the Uyghur People”, April 4, 2022, 2:30 PM.
Madeline Vadkerty, Samuel P. Mandell Fellow in Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Gratz College (USA) and author of several articles about the Holocaust in Slovakia. Topic: “The Holocaust in Slovakia: Letters to President Jozef Tiso 1939-1944”, April 5, 2022, 9:00 AM.
Haras Rafiq, Interim Managing Director of the Institute for Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP) and a trustee of the UK charity: Muslims Against Antisemitism. Leonie and Maximilian are Holocaust Memorial Volunteers from Austria (Gedenkdieners) interning at the Holocaust Education and Genocide Prevention Foundation. Their multimedia presentation focuses on the dangers of prejudice and discrimination and the role of media and propaganda during the Nazi era and today. Patty Chappine, Stockton University. Her research includes Holocaust and genocide studies, women’s history, New Jersey history, digital humanities, and civic activism. Topic: “Women as Resistors in the Holocaust”, April 6, 2022, 10:30 AM.

Michael Berenbaum, writer, lecturer, and teacher consulting in the conceptual development of museums and historical films. His film work has received Academy Awards, an Emmy Award and the Cable Ace Award. And What We Shold Fear of Nazi German Propaganda” April 7, 2022, 10:00 AM.
Terry Glavin, author, journalist, Ottawa Citizen & National Post columnist, Maclean's magazine contributing editor and Senior Fellow, Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights. Robert Krell survived the Holocaust in hiding. He is Emeritus, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia. Some of his work involved treatment issues concerning Holocaust survivors and their children as well as Dutch prisoners of Japanese concentration camps. He has been awarded the Order of Canada. Dr. Matthias Becker, linguist, with a focus on critical discourse and media studies, research on prejudice and nationalism, as well as on the internet/social media studies. John Packer, Neuberger-Jesin Professor of International Conflict Resolution in the Faculty of Law and Director of the Human Rights Research and Education Centre at the University of Ottawa. Edward B. Westermann, Regents Professor of History at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, has written on German military history and the Holocaust. His most recent work, Drunk on Genocide: Alcohol and Mass Murder in Nazi Germany, appeared in 2021. Topic: “Drunk on Genocide”, April 8, 2:30 PM.
