Vanier’s celebration of International Women’s Week, March 7-11, 2022 will explore the meaning of “Family!” Who is family? Does everyone get to create the family they want? Who decides if people can and should constitute a family? This theme will look at some of the central preoccupations in contemporary society. Seventeen different events are planned throughout the week, where guests will include speakers from the medical field, researchers and advocates, as well as students, past and present.
“We will have a chance to hear about government policies that have historically hindered the possibility for different groups to freely pursue their desire to make a family for themselves. We will hear from parents, including Vanier faculty who will talk to us about what parenting means to them. And we will hear from students who will tell us about how they navigate their experiences of family, and within society in general” says Vanier teacher Leila Bdeir principal organizer of this year’s event.
The following are some of the speakers on the program.
Actress Kanjehtiio ‘Tiio’ Horn will talk about her podcast “Coffee with my Ma”
Artist Nina Segalowtiz will present “Throat-singing from mother to daughter: Indigenous culture as inter-generational healing” and discuss what it has meant to share her journey with her daughter.
Mona Greenbaum, Director General of the Coalition des familles LGBTQ+ will speak about the historical struggles and contemporary issues faced by LGBTQ+ families.
Samir Shaheen-Hussain and Patricia Bouchard will discuss the fight against the ongoing effects of medical colonialism on Indigenous families, especially children and the forced sterilization of Indigenous Women in Canada.
Emné Naseredinne and Eli Tareq El Bechalany-Lynch, Montreal writers whose poetry deals with themes surrounding family, will speak about their writing and why they and how they think about family within it.
Nathalie Batraville and Fania Noël will provide a special tribute to feminist scholar bell hooks.
Alan Wong and Jacky Vallée in conversation about queer parenting.
Most of the events will be taking place in person, at Vanier College, in the Auditorium (A-103). Consult the full program and schedule for times and details: https://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/womens-studies/international-womens-week/
