In this program, students learn about children’s cognitive and emotional development, age-specific educational approaches, and curriculum design. They also receive rigorous instruction in the health, safety and wellness techniques needed to create an optimal classroom environment. This knowledge is applied though three fieldwork courses, in which students get the chance to observe and interact with children directly. Graduates leave the program fully qualified for a range of educational and administrative positions in institutions such as pre-schools, CPEs (Centres de la Petite Enfance), licensed daycares and after-school programs. Others pursue university programs like Child Studies, Primary Education and Early Childhood Education, working as teachers, developmental psychologists, children’s advocates, pedagogical consultants and more.
Vanier’s ECE program offers a unique learning experience through its Lab Nursery, an on-campus daycare service housed in the department. As part of their coursework, students analyze interactions between the children and educators in the laboratory-like setting. Thanks to connections with local and international institutions, the department also boasts advanced standing agreements with select universities, as well possible exchange opportunities abroad.
