March 10, 2023

After a gruelling 2-day competition, Vanier College Director General John McMahon is pleased to announce that Sheridan College won the Gold Award at the 2023 Scotiabank Vanier College National Marketing Case Competition that featured some of the best business students in Canada on March 4-5, 2023. Congratulations to Jade-Renee Alcorn, Andres Segura Pallares and Rasleen Kaur Sandhu and their coaches Carol Bureau and Stacey Sheehy for their winning presentation.

Six teams made it to the Sunday finals on March 5th where they analyzed a new Marketing case and presented a second time. These were: Sheridan College who won the Gold Award, Collège Edouard-Montpetit with students Simon Girard, Simon Bonneau-Liard and Lauralie Tanguay and their coaches Louis Bahouth and Pascale Deschenes that won Silver, and Seneca College composed of students Gian Sebastian Villa, Dylan Heida, Yasmine Shateri and Marria Khodchenko with coaches Stefan Kanitz and Margaret Osborne that took Bronze. The other three finalists were George Brown College, Niagara College, and Okanagan College.

Although they were not in the finals, other teams placed well within their division. In Division 1, Durham College came in third place, and Nova Scotia Community College came in fourth. In Division 2, Vanier College placed third and St. Clair placed fourth. In Division 3, Fanshawe College placed third and New Brunswick Community College placed fourth.

During the weekend event, twenty-three teams of marketing students from colleges across Canada had three hours to analyze a real marketing case and present viable marketing solutions before a panel of expert judges. The finalists on Sunday then had to analyze a new marketing case.

At a Gala dinner held on March 4 where finalists were announced, other awards also recognized coaches and students. This year, the Builders Award went to Collège Edouard-Montpetit coaches Pascale Deschenes and Louis Bahouth for their commitment and engagement to supporting their students throughout the competition and their spirit of openness and support for all the teams over the weekend event.

As well, the newly created Julia Ferreira Public Speaking Excellence Awards, named in memory of a Vanier graduate and former case competition participant, was presented by Dave Bussiere from Windsor University’s Odette School of Business. The awards went to the three best public speakers of the competition, chosen from each division: Sabrina Drouin from Algonquin College, Gian Sebastian Villa from Seneca College and Ericka Van Hezewijk from Durham College.

“Partnerships between Vanier and sponsoring organizations like Scotiabank, and others, are essential to helping Vanier offer students from across the country first-class learning opportunities, such as the case competition; one that mirrors how things work in the business world and provides students with practical training the value of which is beyond measure,” said John McMahon.

Scotiabank is very proud to be the principal sponsor of an annual event that allows students, professionals, and mentors to come together and form valuable relationships.

“We never cease to be amazed by the students work ethic, structure, level of preparation, passion and desire to succeed – it is always very impressive at this event! This is an excellent sign for our future generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders,’’ said Paul Yannouris, Regional Director, Small Business Development (Quebec and Eastern Ontario) Scotiabank.

George Dracopoulos, the principal organizer of the Scotiabank Vanier College National Marketing Case Competition, was thrilled with high caliber of this year’s competitors and the competition’s wonderful success. “There were many challenges with a change of venue and a lot of staff turnover in all aspects, but we delivered an unbelievable event that was up one or two notches from its glorious past and was greatly appreciated by all attendees!”
