Sustainability
Doing what’s right for the environment is not always easy. Sometimes you may not even know how to do the right thing. For many people, disposing of dead batteries can be one of those challenges, mostly because we just don’t know where to get rid of them. So, Vanier College wants to help by collecting batteries this winter until Friday March 21, 2025.
In fact, to stimulate the recycling collection, the College is participating in an annual battery recycling competition organized by ENvironnement JEUnesse (ENJEU) in collaboration with Appel à Recycler. Disposing of used batteries in one of the many locations set up on campus, can help Vanier win prizes to be used for environmental purposes.
Participating Cegeps will be able to win prizes. The grand prize will be awarded based on the total weight of the batteries collected, so the more batteries recycled, the better Vanier’s chances at winning. For more details about the categories and types of prizes offered, visit https://enjeu.qc.ca/projets-et-evenements/concours-piles/
There are many reasons to recycle batteries:
• adopting eco-responsible habits in our daily lives
• protecting the environment by keeping hazardous waste from reaching landfill sites
• strengthening the circular economy by reusing battery components and reducing the need for new materials
• improving the safety of people and property by properly disposing batteries
• respecting legal requirements in Quebec requiring batteries to be recycled responsibly at the end of their life
What batteries can be recycled?
All batteries weighing less than 5 kg (11 lbs) are accepted, which means commonly used single-use household batteries, for example A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, button-type as well as rechargeable batteries, commonly found in cordless power tools, cordless phones, cameras.
What batteries can NOT be recycled in this competition?
While e-bike and e-scooter batteries can be recycled, they do not qualify for this contest. To recycle them, check the map link to find a drop-off point near you: https://recyclezvosbatteries.ca/trouvez-centre/?emobility=y
In 2022-2023 Vanier collected 138kg of batteries for the contest.
